Your grandfather has been a wonderful figure in your life, but you recognize that his physical abilities and perhaps even his mental acuity has slowed down tremendously in recent months or years. You wonder if he has some type of dementia, which includes Alzheimer’s. If that’s the case, encourage him to visit his doctor for a formal diagnosis.
In the meantime, though, if you are concerned about his safety because he lives alone, you are not close enough to really offer much help on a regular basis, and there’s nobody else in the family you can turn to, you might want to look at assisted living.
Not sure if this is the time to bring up assisted living with him? Let’s look at three powerful signs that assisted living is truly something he should think about at this stage in his life.
Powerful Sign #1: He needs constant support.
Maybe he doesn’t need “constant” support, but it’s pretty regularly. He might be turning to a neighbor or friend and perhaps you or some other family member when they have time or can get over there. Maybe to visit him is a two hour trip each way and it is simply not something you can do every day.
If he needs regular help to go grocery shopping because he no longer drives, to prepare meals, to get to doctors’ appointments, to clean the house, and so on, then assisted living might very well be the best option at this stage in his life.
Powerful Sign #2: He’s dealing with several health issues.
He may not have Alzheimer’s or some other form of dementia, but he has other health issues to deal with. You might be coping with high blood pressure, diabetes, COPD, maybe he had a heart attack in the past and is now watching what he eats, is supposed be getting exercise but he’s not, and so forth.
If he is living alone and dealing with so many health challenges, that can be problematic in many ways. Experienced staff at a quality assisted living facility would be on the lookout for various signs that something may be wrong. In other words, he would be surrounded by experienced people who can help him deal with many of these health issues he is facing mostly on his own these days.
Powerful Sign #3: Your other loved one’s health is being challenged.
Maybe he’s still married to your grandmother. Maybe it’s your mother looking after him. Or your father. Or a number of family and friends who are helping as much as they can.
However, many family caregivers end up facing health challenges of their own due to stress, exhaustion, mental fatigue, and much more, all because they are trying to help this person they love. If that’s the case, then assisted living would help everyone involved.
How can you talk to him about assisted living?
Be honest. Just talk about it. Learn what you can about assisted living, express your concerns about him at this stage in his life, and mention the many benefits assisted living would offer him these days.
