If your senior parent is aging in place yet struggling with their Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), you may be considering long-term care options. There are numerous types of elder care available, but assisted living may very well be the best for them at this stage in their life.
Why would assisted living be a great elder care option?
First, it allows seniors to live as independently as possible, depending on their physical, emotional, or mental capability to do so. Second, it provides them a safe and welcoming environment surrounded by other people their own age, who often have similar interests. Third, many facilities encourage seniors to be as active (as active as they wish to be). Also, better quality assisted living communities provide exceptional dining options that offer great nutritional value for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Before anyone commits to an assisted living community, they should see what it is like (or would be like) to live there. Taking a tour is a great way to do that.
Some facilities still only provide virtual tours. Some have virtual tours recorded and available on their website. Yet, if you have the opportunity, take an in-person tour with the senior who may need assistance (if they are capable and willing to do so).
While you are on the tour, you may have an opportunity to ask questions. Below are a few you might consider that could help you or this senior decide for themselves that this is what’s best for them moving forward.
Question #1: What is the dining facility like and do seniors have a say in the menu?
This does not mean or imply (in any way) that residents or their family members can dictate what the menu will be at any assisted living community. However, some communities may invite input into its menu.
That could be a great way to change things up and help the seasons or months feel fresher, more inviting and invigorating, and inspiring.
Question #2: Do you offer respite care options?
Many seniors are resistant to the idea of moving from their home, especially when they already feel as though they are losing control of their life. Respite care is an option available at a growing number of assisted living communities. In short, it’s a short-term stay option.
Some facilities may offer the option of seniors being dropped off in the evening and picked up the next morning. Others may allow seniors to stay for a few days a week, a week or two at a time, or some other duration.
That could be a great way for a senior in your life to see firsthand what assisted living would be like for them.
Question #3: What activities are typical throughout the year here?
Elderly men and women are just like you and me; they want to be as active as possible. Some may be limited with their health and physical mobility, but that doesn’t mean they just want to sit and wait for each day to end.
Find out the various activities that the facility offers throughout the year, if there are some that are seasonal, occasional, or regular.
Armed with this information, you can be better prepared to help convince an elderly person in your life that assisted living might just be for them now.
